The word "robot" first appeared in a 1921 stage play by Czech writer Karel Capek. In the play, a man creates a machine that can think, which he calls a robot and which ends up killing its owner. In the 1940s, the American science fiction writer, Isaac Asimov, wrote a series of stories about robots and invented the term “robotics”, the science of robots. Meanwhile, in the real world, the first robots were developed by an engineer, Joseph F. Engelberger, and an inventor, George C. Devol. Together they started Unimation, a manufacturing company that produced the first real robot in 1961, called the Unimate. Robots of this type were installed at a General Motors automobile plant and proved to be a success. They worked reliably and saved money for General Motors, so other companies were soon acquiring robots as well. These industrial robots were nothing like the terrifying creatures that can often be seen in science fiction films. In fact, these robots looked and behaved nothing like humans. They were simply pieces of computer-controlled machines, with metal "arms" or "hands". Since they were made of metal, they could perform certain jobs that were difficult or dangerous for humans, particularly jobs that involve high heat. And since robots were tireless and never got hungry, sleepy, or distracted, they were useful for tasks that would be tiring or boring for humans. Industrial robots have been improved over the years, and today they are used in many factories around the world. Though the use of robots has meant the loss of some jobs, at the same time other jobs have been created in the design, development, and production of the robots.
- Outside of industry, robots have also been developed and put into use by governments and scientists in situations where humans might be in danger. For example, they can be sent in to investigate an unexploded bomb or an accident at a nuclear power plant. Researchers also use robots to collect samples of hot rocks or gases in active volcanoes. In space exploration, robots have performed many key tasks where humans could not be present, such as on the surface of Mars. In 2004, two robotic Rovers, small six-wheeled computerized cars, were sent to Mars. Question 1: When did the word “robot” appear? A. before the 1920s B. in the early 1920s C. in the mid-1920s D. in the late 1920s Question 2: Which of these statements is TRUE about Karel Capek? A. He was famous American playwright. B. A. Because they were reliable and economical to General Motors, other companies started to use robots. B. Other companies started to produce reliable and efficient robots for General Motors. C. Every other company made use of robots because they were time-consuming and safe. D. Robots worked well for General Motors, but caused certain trouble to others. Question 8: According to the passage, what was the primary purpose of the first industrial robots? A. To assist humans in space exploration B. To replace writers in creating science fiction stories C. To develop nuclear power plants D. To perform tasks that were dangerous or difficult for humans Question 9: Why are robots used in situations like investigating unexploded bombs or active volcanoes? A. Because they can think and act like humans B. Because they are more reliable than scientists C. Because they are immune to danger and extreme conditions D. Because they have advanced artificial intelligence Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions . The change in the global surface temperature between 1850 and the end of the 21st Century is likely to exceed 1.5°C, most simulations suggest. The WMO says that if the current warming trend continues, temperatures could rise by 3-5°C by the end of this century. Temperature rises of 2°C had long been regarded as the gateway to dangerous warming. More recently, scientists and policymakers have argued that limiting temperature rises to 1.5°C is safer. An Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report in 2018 suggested that keeping to the 1.5°C target would require “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”. The UN is leading a political effort to stabilise greenhouse-gas emissions for as long as we continue to emit greenhouse gases, temperatures will continue to rise. China emits more CO2 than any other country. It is followed by the US and the European Union member states, although emissions per person are much greater there. However, even if we now cut greenhouse-gas emissions dramatically, scientists say the effects will continue. Large bodies of water and ice can take hundreds of years to respond to changes in temperature. And it takes CO2 decades to be removed from the atmosphere. As more CO2 is released into the atmosphere, uptake of the gas by the oceans increases, causing the water to become more acidic. This could pose major problems for coral reefs. Global warming will cause further changes that are likely to
- result in further heating. This includes the release of large quantities of methane as permafrost - frozen soil found mainly at high latitudes - melts. Responding to climate change will be one of the biggest challenges we face this century. As the world warms, more water evaporates, leading to more moisture in the air. This means many areas will experience more intense rainfall - and in some places snowfall. But the risk of drought in inland areas during hot summers will increase. More flooding is expected from storms and rising sea levels. But there are likely to be very strong regional variations in these patterns. Question 1. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage? A. Solutions to Climate Change B. Global Warming and its Effects C. Greenhouse Emissions and Rising Sea Levels D. The Global Surface Temperature On the Rise Question 2. The word “exceed” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______ . Which of the following statements is NOT true, according to the passage? A. The global temperature is rising much higher than expected. B. Greenhouse-gas emissions are the main cause of global warming. C. Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions will stop global warming immediately. D. Coral reefs could be put at risk due to acidic water caused by CO2 emission. Question 7. Which of the following statements can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Global warming means more rainfall in all places of the world. B. Global warming leads to the decrease in humidity. C. Storms and rising sea levels are caused by floods. D. Global warming may lead to extreme weather. Question 8: According to the passage, what will likely happen if greenhouse-gas emissions continue at the current rate? A. The global surface temperature will remain stable. B. The temperature will rise by 3-5°C by the end of the century. C. The global surface temperature will decrease. D. The amount of CO2 released will significantly drop. Question 9: What is one of the challenges mentioned in the passage regarding responding to climate change? A. The complete reduction of greenhouse gases. B. The slow response of large bodies of water and ice to temperature changes. C. The inability to measure CO2 in the atmosphere. D. The inability of countries to agree on climate policies. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions . The term "folk song" has been current for over a hundred years, but there is still a good deal of disagreement as to what it actually means. The definition provided by the International Folk Music Council states that folk music is the music of ordinary people, which is passed on from person to person by being listened to rather than learned from the printed page. Other factors that help shape a folk song include: continuity (many performances over a number of years): variation (changes in words and melodies either through artistic interpretation or failure of memory); and selection (the acceptance of a song by the community in which it evolves). When songs have been subjected to these processes, their origin is usually impossible to trace. For instance, if a farm laborer were to make up a song and sing it to a couple of friends who like it and memorize it, possibly when the friends come to sing it themselves, one of them might forget some of the words and make up new ones to fill the gap, while the other, perhaps more artistic, might add a few decorative touches to the tune and improve a couple of lines of text. If this happened a few times, there would be many different versions, the song's original composer would be forgotten, and the song would become common property. This constant reshaping and re-creation is the essence of folk music. Consequently, modern popular songs and other published music, even though widely sung by people who are not professional musicians, are not considered folk music. The music and words have been set by a printed or recorded source, limiting scope for
- further artistic creation. These songs' origins cannot be disguised and therefore they belong primarily to the composer and not to a community. The ideal situation for the creation of folk music is an isolated rural community. In such a setting folk songs and dances have a special purpose at every stage in a person's life, from childhood to death. Epic tales of heroic deeds, seasonal songs relating to calendar events, and occupational songs are also likely to be sung.
